High School Musical is coming back… but don’t look for Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens or Ashley Tisdale!

Walt Disney has announced that HSM is coming back for a fourth time, but with new characters replacing Troy, Gabriella and Sharpay.

High School Musical 4 will debut on the Disney Channel in 2010, marking a return to TV after the third installment premiered in movie theaters in 2008.

HSM has been big business for Disney since the original debuted in Jan. 2006. Not only has it been seen by over 300 million viewers in more than 100 nations, it produced a hit soundtrack, a concert tour and it launched the careers of Zac, Vanessa and Ashley, who have all moved on to various other roles. However, the characters they made famous graduated at the end of HSM 3 — and the actors made it clear that they wouldn’t return for a fourth installment — which paved the way for this introduction of new characters.

Kinda like Saved By the Bell: The New Class… without the return of Screech.
